~"No wonder I can't think," I said, jumping up to get my wheels.

,I barely met deadline.
@ That evening when I got home, I wanted to talk to Grandpa, but I was too

embarrassed. Despite the friendship between Marnie and me, I'd never had
difficulty writing about the girls' team, so I didn't want to admit I was
struggling to remain objective about the guys. Grandpa would never
understand-- I knew he'd never felt a strange happiness bubbling up in him
when the Colts' middle linebacker brushed against him.
0I have to get over this,è I told myself. No one would guess I'd fallen for
the guy I'd once taken shots at. Certainly not the target himself.
But what if Adam was seeing me differently too? I knew that all kinds of
girls were interested in him. What kind of girl was he drawn to?
6 I couldn't believe I was wondering about these things instead of why the
team had played a 2-1-1-2 offense when the 2-1-3 was more suited to our
strengths.
Marnie came over that evening to work on a Spanish project with me. I was
dying to talk about Adam but not quite ready to. I'd eventually confess how I
felt to Marnie; chances were she'd already guessed.
H We worked for a solid hour on our project, then took a break, sitting
cross-legged on my bedroom floor, throwing M&M's in the air and catching them
with our mouths.
t"Did you talk to Kelly today?" Marnie asked between gulps.
120
È"She was in the news office after school, running her mouth as usual. I've
learned to tune her out."
|"So you didn't hear her talking about the dance," Marnie said.

>"Nope. Did I miss a big scoop?"
îMarnie hesitated. "This isn't a scoop," she replied, "but when I saw Josh in
chem lab today, I asked him to the dance."
6"Cool!" I exclaimed. "He is soP nice, Marn. You'd make a great couple."
Z"Don't get carried away. We're just friends."
H I wiggled my finger in the bag, trying to get out the last few candies. "So?
You never know where being friends can lead to. Is that what Kelly's spreading
around?"
p"No. She's spreading the news about her date with Adam."
ØIt felt like a giant-sized candy had just gotten stuck in my throat. "Adam
... and Kelly?" I swallowed hard.
Marnie nodded.
H"Well," I said, "that's a surprise." He can't like Kelly! He can't be a
sucker for the compliments of a ditz!
But obviously he did and he was. "Did she ask him or he ask her?"
d"I don't know, but I'll find out," Marnie replied.
8All jocks want is adoration,H I thought. "No. No, don't bother," I said
aloud. "Well, it looks like we're all going with dates. Daniel E-mailed me a
second time and said he's coming after all."
\Marnie looked surprised. "Do you want him to?"
121
&"Sure. Can't wait."
Þ"Jane," she said, catching my hand before I tossed and swallowed another
candy, "you're just no good at lying."
"Where have you been?" Vinny demanded Friday afternoon when I arrived at the
guys' lacrosse game five minutes after it had started.
¤"Back at the office," I told him. "Tom said you were out here, so I didn't
worry."
"IÐ worried," said Vinny. "It's good to have two sets of eyes, one pair to

see what the other pair missed."
hHe was quoting me from our first few games together.
î"But your eyes aren't missing much anymore," I replied. "You did a great job
on your last article. Tom thought so too."
p"Yeah?" He rubbed his hand over his short, bristly hair.
8 "Yeah! You didn't just describe, you analyzed. And you worked your quotes in
well and--what was that--what happened?" I asked when the ref blew his
whistle.
¶"Red in the crease," he replied. "Aren't you supposed to be keeping your eyes
on the game?"
Æ At the beginning of the season I'd reminded Vinny over and over that he
could talk to me without looking at me--he was always to keep his eyes on the
action. Now I climbed up on the bleacher behind him so I could watch the game
and Kelly,

² who was sitting about ten feet to the left of us. What did Adam see in her?
I mean, besides the huge eyes, the full, round mouth, and the enchanted look
she could get on her face? I couldn't believe how jealous I was.
d I forced myself to focus on the game. Our offense worked the ball around,
then Adam sent a screaming pass into Pablo, who quick-sticked it into the net.
I whooped with the crowd.
D"Jane, you're beating on my back."
"Oh. Sorry."
"Adam should probably have taken that shot," Vinny said. "Pablo has scored
twice, and they're keying in on him. Adam was in the clear. A strong shot from
him, even if blocked, would have taken the pressure off Pablo, spread the
defense more. Don't you think?"
0"Vinny, did you memorize everything I told you? [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
